Affiliation guidelines for DMU students:
When a student from Des Moines University works with a different university and publishes a research paper, the affiliation listed under authorship typically reflects the institution where the majority of the research was conducted.
- Independent Research: The student should use the affiliation of the university where the research was primarily conducted. If the student conducted the research entirely independently, without institutional support, they might indicate their primary university as their affiliation, with a note about the independent nature of the work in the acknowledgment section.
- Host Institution Affiliation: If the student conducted the research at a different university or institution (e.g., as a visiting student, intern, or participant in a summer research program), they should use the affiliation of the host institution where the research was carried out. This is usually the institution where the student receives supervision, resources, and support for the project.
- Acknowledgments: If the host institution and corresponding author agree, then in the acknowledgments section of the paper, the student can clarify the circumstances of their research, such as any support received from advisors or facilities at the host institution, and note that the work was done independently during their summer break.
- Communicating with Mentors: The student needs to communicate with any mentors or supervisors involved to ensure the affiliations and acknowledgments are accurately and appropriately represented.
